The Turtle Festival of Velas is annually organized by Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra (SNM) and the Kasav Mitra Mandal (KMM), during the period of February to March. This festival is attended by nature lovers, marine turtle enthusiasts, volunteers, known personalities in the field of conservation, tourists and people who just want to witness this moment, at least once in a lifetime!
SNM has been the first organization to take this initiative of Marine Turtle Conservation on the Western Coast of India. From the time they began their conservation programme in 2002, SNM has protected 681 nests and released over 30,465 hatchlings into the sea. Thanks to their efforts, the Olive Ridley sea turtle can expect of have a fighting chance at survival.
SNM has incorporated a most valuable aspect in its bid to raise and sustain awareness of Marine turtles. They have involved the villagers of the coasts where these turtles come to nest. With this, they have managed to change the mindsets of the local population.
SNM also carries out conservation work, most notably on the White-bellied Sea Eagle (also found in Velas), White-rumped Vultures (found in nearby Anjarla), Indian Swiftlets and also, mangroves in Maharashtra.
To ensure local participation in marine turtle conservation SNM established the Kasav Mitra Mandal (Friends of the Turtle), a committee consisting of the people of Velas. Since marine turtle nesting in the village is more as compared to other regions, the Turtle Festival is conducted here. The members provide home-stays to tourists and contribute 10% of their earnings to the Marine turtle Conservation Fund of Velas, enabling the conservation process to be sustainable.
This initiative of marine turtle conservation through alternate livelihoods is unique throughout India...
The Gram Panchayat of Velas has supported turtle conservation in the village since its inception. The Forest Department, through its guidance and prompt response has consistently provided encouragement to Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra to continue with its activities across the entire coast of Maharashtra.
